Today's lecture was probably my favourite one so far. It was very interesting to get an insight on supply chain management. It was also good to interact with many different people from different groups. It did look and sound a bit like a fish market though because there was so much noise and so much interaction. There were a few disagreements within the group as well and a bit of impatience when we couldn't get our supplies on time. Overall, quite an enjoyable lecture.
true, really interesting exercise and class.. but i'm wondering how it relates to real life supply chain issues
ReplyDeleteAnything that we can relate back the dry textbooks is so worth doing... imagine the days of taking orders by fax? painful.
ReplyDeleteThank God for technology :D
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoyed the lecture.
ReplyDeleteThe game is a simple but very powerful version of real life. It shows how lack of co-ordination, communiation and ultimately trust, given that we operate in a network environment, can affect companies to the point of making them go bost.
ICT can help, but we also need people to make full use of it and show others the benefits of their use.
In areas like procurement and marketing, there are similar issues. People not talking to others outside their own functional area. Or organisations with very limited reward systems, where everyone competes for their own performance, not for the performance of the overall 'chain'.
It also makes you think what the purpose of networking is.
We do not see much of supply chains, we only see the visible things in amazon, ebay and the like. What happens behind is quite incredible, stressful, complex, and unthinkable many times.
So Jawad, where would you like to work? At the customer end? Or developing the ICT that keeps a supply chain together?
Regards,
JR
I would much rather prefer to work at the customer end. I'm the kind of person that likes doing stuff all the time. I can't be behind the scenes all the times. I like to be out there and make things happen.
